How to buy iPhones and electronics wholesale for resale

Updated

Buy from authorized distributors or verified wholesalers, start with a small order, and check every unit's serial number before you resell. Electronics margins are thin and stock loses value as newer models arrive, so speed of payment and sell-through matter as much as the purchase price.

Where wholesale electronics come from

  • Authorized distributors and the brand's reseller programs. The safest source, with the strictest approval requirements. Contact the brand directly to ask how to become a reseller.
  • Established wholesalers and liquidators. Often cheaper and easier to join, but you must verify them.
  • Trade marketplaces. Convenient, with buyer protection on some platforms, but quality varies.
  • Overseas suppliers. Sometimes cheaper, but watch for gray market stock, regional variants and counterfeits.

Check before you buy

  1. Verify the seller. Legal name, registration, references and a live video of the stock.
  2. Ask about condition and origin. New, open box, refurbished, carrier-locked or unlocked, and which country's model.
  3. Request serial numbers or IMEIs before shipping. Apple lets anyone look up a device's coverage by serial number at checkcoverage.apple.com.
  4. Order a small batch first. Inspect packaging, seals, accessories and the devices themselves.
  5. Confirm the warranty. Know who stands behind a unit if it fails.

Know the risks

  • Counterfeits. U.S. Customs and Border Protection reports large volumes of counterfeit goods at the border (CBP). Prices far below the market are a warning.
  • Fast price drops. Current models lose value once newer ones are announced, so slow stock gets expensive.
  • Allocations. Distributors often release limited stock to whoever pays first, so being able to pay quickly can decide whether you get the units.
  • Regional models. A phone built for another market may not work well, or carry warranty, in the US.

Plan your cash

You often pay before you can sell, so cash flow limits how much you can buy. Work out how long a unit takes to sell and be paid for, add freight and duties, and size your orders to that cycle.

How Shield helps

Shield offers US business accounts and business credit cards for importers, exporters and wholesalers, including electronics wholesalers and resellers. Pay by card where a supplier accepts one. Where it does not, send a wire from your credit line, which keeps your own cash free for the next order. Limits are based on your company's revenue, cash flow, reserves and operating history, with no personal credit check and no personal guarantee. It is a pay-in-full card with no interest. Give each store or sales channel its own virtual card to track spend. Shield also pays suppliers in China and Hong Kong.

FAQ

Can I buy iPhones directly from Apple for resale? Apple has its own reseller programs and terms. Contact Apple directly to ask what applies to your business.

Is it legal to resell gray market phones? Gray market devices are genuine products sold outside the brand's official channel. Rules on resale, warranty and labeling vary, so check requirements for your market before buying.

How do I know if a phone is a counterfeit? Check the serial number or IMEI, inspect the packaging and software, and buy a sample first. Do not rely on photos.
